The Kirkwood care for Ted

The Kirkwood is here for anyone with a life limiting illness in Kirklees, we care for many patients on our In-Patient Unit who are under the expert support and care from our wonderful clinical staff who work hard to make people’s lives just that little bit more comfortable.

One person we have had on the In-Patient Unit is John Firth who is 93-year-old. John better known as Ted used to be a roofer in the area and has been married to his wife June for 60 years. Over the last few years he has been diagnosed with prostate cancer. Ted was admitted onto The Kirkwood’s In-Patient Uni to help deal with his pain management.

With his family and friends around him, Ted has felt he has got the expert support from our clinical team whilst on the unit.

On that care and support he has said: “I have prostate cancer and The Kirkwood have been making sure I am not in any pain with it, they are helping with my medication. I can’t speak highly enough of the people who work here, there is only one description for it and that is 100%."

“I was diagnosed six years ago with cancer, but it has now spread into my bones. Whilst here I have eaten well, better than I've ever eaten in my life, I am sleeping well and being so well looked after, I am being so carefully thought about in every aspect.

“The Kirkwood is run so professionally, there are so many nurses to help patients like me with anything they need.

“I appreciate the fact that The Kirkwood has stepped in at this time to support me with my pain management.”
